I want to convert my boat in a pedal boat when riding a bicycle on the boat and recumbant operate a variable pitch propeller through a shaft. How I can convert the rotational force of the bicycle in the vertical plane (as a spinning bicycle wheel) to the transverse plane (like a propeller turning)? Could this be an efficient method of propulsion? The only pedal boats I've seen are very inefficient pontoon boats in the ponds. Why not use more pedal as a propulsion system on a boat - I think a strategy used low. PS - I like but I hate rowing backwards all the time.

If you need an accessory you will need some 90 degree bevel gear to "change direction "with the force of rotation. If you're not so married to the property, just could mount paddle wheels on each side of the boat.
