Is it safe for a dog to run alongside a bicycle rider while on leash?

My dog needs to get more exercise (and me too), but I wonder if it is really safe for them to run along side a bicycle on leash?
Also, I am concerned about my dogs feet running on hot asphalt?
I am assuming that cars and traffic would not be the issue, since I would choose a remote road.

Depends.

The dog has to be physically able to run.

The dog has to be trained to run next to a bicycle.

You have to have good harness and lead. Look for equipment made for horses or sled dogs.

You have to practice A LOT in a place where you won't get hit by a car. I used to take my dog for a run late at night.

NEVER wrap the dog's lead around you or your bicycle.
I have scars to prove the best trained dogs will bolt when freaked or distracted by cats.
