When you give your baby rice cereal, do they drink less milk?

At first, it's only minute amounts that they are taking- a tablespoon or two of runny cereal from a spoon. I can't keep my 6 mo daughter in breastmilk! lol when do you think her volumes will go down a bit- when she starts taking more cereal?

And when can I increase her cereal intake? She just started yesterday, but she was a pro. It all went down the hatch, she didn't even get any on her bib lol! It was like she was eating for months. I think she would let me give her cereal 3 x a day and be thrilled- but I should start slower right? Once a day maybe?

You should definitely start slower. What you are currently doing...a tablespoon once a day is great.

There's quite a bit of people on here that just don't understand the fact that solids are NOT supposed to take the place of breastmilk/formula. If their milk intake decreases, then you're feeding too much solids.

The reason you don't want their milk intake to decrease is that there are no solid foods out there that have the right amounts of vitamins/minerals that a baby needs. Only breastmilk/formula can supply that.

If solids are taking the place of some of the milk, then the child is being deprived of certain amounts of these vitamins and minerals. This is so important that breastmilk/formula needs to be their MAIN source of nutrition until they are a YEAR old. This means that until they are a year, they should still be drinking more breastmilk/formula than anything else.

So basically, you slowly work your way into more solids. At first, the 1 tbsp once a day is perfect. Then next week you might want to try a different food. Don't add that, replace the cereal with it instead. Do not let your baby fill up on solids. Solids should only be offered AFTER they've nursed or had a bottle, never before, or in place of.

Even at 7-8 months, my breastfed and huge daughter was only getting solids a few times a week, never more than once a day. Solids simply aren't important until they are a year old. In fact, most breastfed infants don't need anything but breastmilk for the first year of their life.
