I could really use some advice from the bicycle riders out there, can you help me out?

I am looking to buy a used bike, but I'm not sure what type is right for me. There are so many different types out there, and it's hard to make a choice. I know I don't want a mountain bike (too heavy) or a BMX bike (Too small). I also don't want a recumbent bike.

I'm thinking either a road bike, hybrid bike, or touring bike.

I'm a student that needs to be able to commute to and from university, as well as occasionally ride to the store and around town. Most things are within 5 miles. It's moderately hilly where I live, but the roads have bike lanes for the most part, and there are a fair amount of side walks.

Any thoughts?

If you're looking for a commute bike to ride about 5 miles and errands, then you want something that is comfortable, that can carry a rack or panniers, and that is not likely to attract criminals when you lock it up. You don't need speed.

Some posters have recommended cyclocross bikes like the Surly Cross Check. I would love to have one of those, but I think that's too expensive for the type of riding that you mentioned. If you're going on road rides for training (20+ miles), multi-day touring, or cyclocross races; then go for the Surly.

I would consider a flat bar road bike or an entry to mid-level mountain bike. The upright position will be most suitable for short commutes and errands, and will be stable when loaded with groceries and work clothes. You can attach racks, panniers, and trailers to these bikes to carry stuff when running errands.
